Wrinkle Relaxing

What is it?

More widely known as Botox (trade name), Botulinum Toxin was first used in 1973 to correct eye squints. During these procedures it was realised that fine lines, wrinkles and sweating were all reduced. When injected into the muscle, the neuromuscular transmission is blocked thus weakening or inactivating the muscle.

In other words, it works by stopping the chemical message passing via the nerve to tell the muscle to contract.

Why do we get wrinkles & fine lines?

Our facial muscles are used to show expression, gradually over time repeated use of muscles causes lines to crease, forming lines. During the aging process, collagen & elastin production slows and overuse of the muscles makes these lines more permanent. BotulinumToxin reduces this movement allowing the skin to stop these creases and to recover, soften and even fade away. The idea of Botulinum Toxin is to re-educate the facial muscles (no more than 3 monthly is recommended). However, eventually it will be expected that an annual maintenance dose will normally be the treatment plan for most people.

Where can Botulinum Toxin be used?

  • Frown lines

  • Crows feet lines

  • Forehead lines

  • Lower face lines

  • Brow lifts

  • Nose/Bunny lines

  • Vertical lines to upper lip

  • Droopy mouth

  • Masseter for Buxism (teeth grinding)

What to expect?

You will be thoroughly assessed by the Advanced Nurse Practitioner, who will decide if you are suitable to have this treatment. You will be asked for your informed consent in order to proceed with the treatment and also to take an initial pre-treatment photograph and post treatment photograph at your 2 week follow up appointment.

After evaluating your lines, the Advanced Nurse practitioner will clean the areas ready for treatment. The Botulinum Toxin will be with a very fine needle into the facial muscles where the treatment is required. It is a relatively painless procedure which usually takes approximately 15 minutes to perform. Written advice on aftercare will be provided.
